9 Design Mistakes to Avoid During Your Kitchen Renovation

Kitchen Remodel Kansas City

Redoing your kitchen is a project many homeowners dream of and save for years to make happen. However, a kitchen makeover, like most home remodeling in Kansas City, has many potential pitfalls.

1. Being too trendy. That orange counter top may look chic today, but will you still be as happy with it in 10 years? Unless you’re absolutely sure, it’s better to leave the trendy to things that are easily changed, like paint.

2. Not investing in quality materials. Home remodeling in Kansas City isn’t inexpensive. You may be tempted to save by skimping on quality materials. That’s generally a bad idea. You don’t want to have to replace the tile, the flooring or the plumbing again anytime soon.

3. Trying to do too much yourselves. You can save a lot of money by doing some of your kitchen remodeling work yourselves. However, some elements of a kitchen redesign, such as installing hardwood floors and installing stone counter tops, are best left to the professionals.

4. Planning for too little counter space. Remember that once you have all of your kitchen gear in place, you’ll have a lot less space to work with.

5. Ignoring the triangle rule. Conventional kitchen design wisdom says that the sink, stove and refrigerator should all have easy access from one to another.  Put an island in the way or an inconvenient door swing and you’re sure to notice the difference over time.

6. Planning for too little storage. Like counter space, you really can’t have too much.

7. Adding an island when you don’t have enough room. Squeezing an island in a kitchen design that doesn’t have enough room can be a disaster and cause bottlenecks when more than one person is working in the kitchen. Better to leave out the island if you don’t have room.

8. Not adding enough light. You need plenty of light in a kitchen. Make sure to add overnight lighting, under the counter lighting and sufficient light over the sink.

9. Over spending. Although you plan on living in your home for a long time, you’ll likely want to sell it at some point. Spending too much on your remodeling reduces the odds of your recouping your investment when you sell.

Kitchen and other home remodeling in Kansas City is exciting. Make sure to avoid our nine common mistakes and you’ll have a new kitchen that you can enjoy for years and years to come.
